The first ASEM Economic Ministers' Meeting (EMM) was held in Makuhari, Japan, on 27-28 September and attended by the Ministers responsible for economic affairs from ten Asian and fifteen European nations, with the Luxembourg Minister of Economy acting also as Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the Vice-President of the European Commission. The meeting was chaired by the Minister of International Trade and Industry Mitsuo Horiuchi of Japan.

The third ASEM Economic Ministers’ Meeting (EMM 3) was held in Hanoi on 10th and 11th September 2001. It was attended by Ministers for economics, trade and industry from ten Asian countries, with Viet Nam and China as Asian Coordinators, and fifteen European nations, with Belgium acting as President of the Council of the European Union, and by the European Commissioner responsible for trade.

ASEM Senior Officials will meet to prepare for the upcoming 11th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held in New Delhi, India in November 2013.

The fourth ASEM Economic Ministers' Meeting (EMM 4) was held in Copenhagen on September 2002. It was attended by Ministers for Economics, Trade and Industry from ten Asian countries, with Vietnam and China acting as Asian coordinators, and the fifteen Member States of the European Union, co-ordinated by Denmark, in its role as President of the Council of the European Union, and the European Commissioner responsible for Trade.

Following the recommendation of the Second Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 2) held in London in 1998 to promote greater cooperation between ASEM partners in the field of science and technology, and acting upon a Chinese initiative, Ministers or their representatives responsible for science and technology from the ten Asian and the fifteen European countries of ASEM.   The ASEM Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting focused on the theme of "ASEM Science and Technology cooperation in the 21st Century".
