The ASEM Finance Ministers' Meeting (FinMM) is an integrated element of the ASEM process.

Earlier ASEM Finance Ministers' Meetings have pursued a dialogue on matters of common interest, in such fields as exchanging views concerning the global economic outlook, the international financial architecture, the more effective implementation of existing supervisory principles and regulations in the financial sector, combating money laundering, and strengthening cooperation in the field of customs. Normally during the meeting, Finance Deputies' Meeting is also held.

In March 1996, the First Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM I) was held in Bangkok, Thailand , addressed several issues regarding politic, economic, finance and culture. This drove to the consideration to arrange the Asia-Europe Finance Ministers Meeting (ASEM FNMM I) which this idea was further informally discussed at the APEC Finance Ministers Meeting among the Asian side on 16 March, 1996 in Kyoto, Japan. And the Asian member countries mutually agreed to support this idea.

In July 1996, European Finance Ministers met and raised the issue of Asia-Europe Finance Ministers Meeting which they all agreed to hold this meeting in Thailand since this idea was initiated by the former Thai Minister, H.E. Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai. Finance Ministers have pursued dialogue on matters of common interest, in such fields as an exchange of views concerning international financial architecture, the more effective implementation of existing supervisory principles and regulations in the financial sector, combating money laundering, and strengthening cooperation in the field of customs.

The 4th Finance Ministers' Meeting was held in Denmark on 5 & 6 July 2002 bringing together officials from ten Asian ASEM partners and the four EU Troika partners.  In addition to the ASEM members (Ministers for Finance or their representatives from 25 countries and the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs) the Asian Development Bank, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund participated as invited guests.
